Bangladesh has come under sustained domestic and international scrutiny over allegations of human rights abuses, political violence and large-scale financial irregularities during years of rule by the Awami League, according to rights groups, media investigations and international observers.
Human rights organisations have documented hundreds of alleged cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings since 2009, often attributing responsibility to security forces. The government has consistently denied systematic abuse, saying law enforcement actions were taken to maintain public order and counter extremism.
Concerns have also been raised over sexual violence cases in which individuals described by local media as politically connected were accused. While crime statistics do not categorise offences by political affiliation, rights advocates argue that perceptions of political influence have, in some cases, undermined public confidence in accountability and justice.
Separately, allegations of large-scale money laundering have intensified debate over governance and corruption. Estimates by watchdog groups and economic analysts suggest that billions of dollars may have left the country annually through illicit financial flows, though authorities say precise figures are difficult to verify and that investigations are ongoing.
The Awami League has repeatedly stated that it does not protect criminals and that anyone found guilty, regardless of political identity, should face the law. It also points to legal reforms and anti-corruption measures introduced during its tenure.
International organisations, including the United Nations and global rights groups, have urged Bangladesh to strengthen independent investigations, ensure judicial transparency and safeguard civil liberties, warning that unresolved allegations risk eroding democratic institutions and public trust.
